According to one source, the modern gay community can be traced to the 1970s. But it wasn't until 1991 when Shappo, an American soldier who treated her lesbianism as a badge of pride, formed the first visible gay group here. Two years later, a Korean-American gay man established the first Korean gay and lesbian co-gendered group.

Since then, Korean gays have been gradually moving away from the underground scenes in Itaewon and Chong-no. Increasingly, gays are entering the mainstream especially at universities, forming clubs and cafes and, as is so evident from the Gay South Korea website, Internet groups across the country.

Now, more than 30 universities, including Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Pusan University have gay clubs. Some 20 gay cafes and pubs dot Seoul's Itaewon district. Others are popping up in the cities of Shinchon, Hongdae, Inchon, Anyang and Ansan. The Kyongsang and Cholla provinces and even remote Jeju Island have establishments for gays now.

Shifting a heavily laden paradigm is not an easy task, especially when it is so ingrained in culture and religion. But a paradigm is still nothing more than collective ideas and ideas inevitably change when pushed by pragmatism and humanism.

The KNTO notes a 63.8 percent leap in Thai arrivals, while airlines rush to add flights. The Korea National Tourism Organisation's office in Thailand expects 120,000 Thais will travel to the North Asian destination this year. It represents a substantial increase over 2005, prompting several airlines to add more direct flights. KNTO manager in Thailand , Panmeth na Ranong, said outbound traffic to Korea jumped 63.8 percent to 92,653 from January to October this year, over the 56,569 visitors recorded for the same period in 2005.

Demand for Korean holidays outweighed airline-seat supply, triggering many airlines to add non-stop flights to Korea , such as Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, Thai Airways International and budget airline Orient Thai Airlines. Other airlines, such as Cathay Pacific Airways and Vietnam Airlines stop at their home bases but have connecting flights.

Mr Panmeth stated that some travel agents have been taking advantage of the shortage of direct flights to operate tour programmes to a third destination, such as Hong Kong or Vietnam, before continuing to Korea. Korean Air will begin operating three daily flights from Bangkok to Seoul starting 1 January 2007 , to meet the demand. They will depart at 22.40, 1.40 and 2.40 using Boeing 777-300s.

Asiana Airlines said next week it will announce a boost in its frequency from its current 11 weekly flights. Mr Panmeth said that KNTO will focus on incentive groups coming on excursions and for seminars, especially factory visits, with the slogan,Korea is your new destination. He noted that this segment of the Thai market has grown 40 percent.

KNTO will assist incentive and excursion groups by letting them use the conference room at the Tourism Information Centre at the head office in Seoul at no charge. The venue can accommodate 200 persons for orientation sessions. The KNTO will also provide Korea Travel Cards, valued at Bt4,000, for groups with more than 20 people during low season.

Eastern Seaboard passengers wanting to avoid Suvarnabhumi can opt for Bt16,500 roundtrip fare between U-Tapao and Seoul. Korean Air launches new flights from U-Tapao to Incheon starting 1 November 2006 , with a Bt16,500 roundtrip fare, excluding taxes and surcharges.

The airline has operated a charter flight between Incheon and U-Tapao since last year, according to Korean Air passenger sales manager, Suchon Paleewong. He added inbound booking performance stood at around 75% to 80%, which is considered satisfactory. As a result, the airline switched the charter service to a regular flight, to provide more convenience for its passengers, who want to would rather depart from U-Tapao.

He added that BSP agents in Pattaya and Rayong can sell the route to passengers who do not want to fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport , especially those staying on the lower east coast such as businessmen working in industrial complexes at Mabtapud, Rayong or Chon Buri. I admit I know very little about these Koreans until Jewel In The Palace was shown on TV in Malaysia. Before this TV series, there have been a series of Korean TV serials that took Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines by storm.

Thank god for the subtitles, otherwise none of us could relate to the Korean TV shows and movies.

Practically, the only person I can associate right now with Korean shows is Lee Young Ae. She's that very sweet actress who landed the coveted role in Jewel In The Palace and brought more publicity to South Korea than the entire South Korean Tourism Authority and Tourism Ministry combined.

For a while back there, Lee was nicknamed the Asian Sweetheart. It's true, she's really quite pretty. Hong Kong has fallen head over heels in love with her when her TV series overtook all its local productions in the popularity ratings.

I recall seeing her being interviewed on Hong Kong television. She was very careful in how she conducted herself as she knew she represented her entire nation.

In the interview, she projected herself as being intelligent, demure and soft-spoken. Qualities that every Asian mother would want in a daughter and every Asian man would want in a wife.

The direct translation of Jewel In The Palace which stamped her mark permanently in the television hall of ame is Dae Jang Geum.

It was reported that when the concluding episode of this series was shown in Hong Kong, about half of Hong Kong's population stayed home to watch it.

Lee was born on January 31, 1971 in Seoul. She's of normal height for an Asian woman - 1.65m. Before anyone can jump to the conclusion that she's "just an ordinary actress of no great significance", let it be known that she has a Bachelor's degree from the Hanyang University in German language and literature.

So we can safely assume that Lee speaks German quite fluently. If that is not enough, Lee also has a Masters degree from Chung-an University. She majored in theatre and film. She also speaks English quite well.

South Korea has agreed to readmit beef exports from the US. Australia's share of the market has grown by 120 per cent since US beef was banned in 2004, and is now worth $600 million.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) says the resumption of the American beef trade could cut the value of our exports by more than 20 per cent. South Korea's Agriculture Ministry has just announced that 36 US slaughterhouses designated to handle meat for export to South Korea met required safety measures, clearing the last hurdle to the resumption of imports.

MLA Korean manager, Glen Feist says the Americans have had a tough time convincing the Koreans to accept meat with bone chip fragment.
"The protocol is no bones, but everybody knows in our industry that from time to time you do get bone chips on the primal cuts of beef through boning problems, especially in the biggest US plants," he said.

This may at the end of the day may hold things up further because they need to resolve the bone chip issue." Meanwhile, the US has only shipped 100 tonnes of beef to Japan, after regaining access to the market a month ago. The start of the export program has been slower than expected because of strict protocols and a lack of consumer demand.

Pork ribs are usually cooked spicy with chili paste, but for a simpler taste, after marinating the meat in rice wine and ginger juice, marinate in 'bul-go-gi' sauce. If the meat is cooked slowly in low heat, the meat becomes tough, so cooking quickly in high heat is better.

Basic Ingredients

1.8kg pork ribs, 2 tablespoons of ginger juice, 3 tablespoons of clear strained rice wine for sauce 8 tablespoons of chili

paste, 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 3 tablespoons of ground garlic,

1/2 cup of chopped green onion, sesame salt, pepper, sesame oil

Recipe

1. Cut the ribs into 6-7cm lengths. Take off the fat and tough muscles. put the knife in to the bones and then flat out the muscle attached to the bone. Make knife marks on the meat.

2. Marinate the prepared pork in clear strained rice wine and ginger juice.

3. Prepare the sauce by mixing chili powder, soy sauce, sugar, minced garlic, green onion, sesame salt, pepper and sesame oil in chili paste.

4. Marinate the prepared pork from 2. with sauce from 3.

5. Grill the pork in high heat by turning it often. To make sure it is thoroughly cooked, lower the heat and cook slowly.

6. It is a good idea to cook some whole garlics with it.
